Before/After was a short film based on a play and comprised of short scenes with different characters in different Hotel Rooms. There were 6 hotel rooms in the script, the budget was £500 and the shoot would last just under a week. This was the first time I had ever designed for film.

I knew that we couldn’t afford to build 6 sets so I planned to make two sets and continuously re-dress them. After research I sketched out different options for the layout, and put together a plan of making the two sets change their layout by using flats that would plug in and out making it possible to move windows and doors. I spent a long time using CAD to figure out the changes for each set, I also designed a section of a bathroom wall to enable the door to be ajar.
Once I was satisfied with the workings I drew up scale drawings and sent them to the carpenter and acquired all the dressing materials. I made a time plan for the Art Department as our job was difficult and tight on time; happily enough the shooting crew understood the challenge we had and organised their shooting schedule around us.

Set 1: First used for ‘Bulb’ room; a short scene where a bulb explodes, then redressed for ‘Painting’; where a man enters a painting and later his wife is interviewed by police, then it was broken apart and used to create 1 side of a long corridor for ‘Running Man’; were a man is repeatedly running into a door.

Set 2: First used for ‘Blue’ room; a scene of an affair, then as ‘Red Head’ a scene of the revenge affair and lastly as ‘Beetle’ where a strange character has taken residence in his hotel room.
