‘The Butterfly Tattoo’ is a low budget Feature Film based on a book of the same name by Phillip Pullman. It’s a tragic romance and takes place almost entirely in Oxford, England.
I originally started out as the Production Designer (which was a bit of a leap), and half way through the shoot, Gareth Thomas, the Art Director took over as Production Designer; My lack of experience on organising such a large production was causing me to get snowed under, and I became the Art Director (we basically swapped roles).
My portfolio work shows only work that I designed so as not to take credit for any of Gareth’s work.
On this film I gained a lot of experience on recce with the Locations Manager; photographing and measuring up potential locations and identifying possible issues and what the Art Department would need to deal with at each location (47 locations in total). Then discussing each option with the Director & DOP.
I also farmed out a lot of Graphics for the production; something I had rarely done before, and gained experience in product placement & clearance for company logo’s etc.
